The Queen Regent Gwamile (also known as Labotsibeni) dominated Swazi politics for three decades. A highly competant and charismatic woman, she tried to redress the land question as well as sort out some of the mess from the Concession era. She oversaw the education of her grandson, Sobhuza II. She abdicated in his favour in 1921 and died four years later.

1920's
Photographer: Unknown    Photo Source: Dawson family

this view of Mbabane clearly shows the effect of tin mining. The mountains were washed with water, the soil ran off exposing the heavier tin nuggets. The silt then settled in valleys, here shown as white vegetation free areas. The Mall and the Plaza are built on silt from tin mining. Hydraulic mining was banned in the 1950's when the rivers were more than 10% silt, causing cattle deaths.
