1980's to the present This period is not really within the scope of history - it is too recent and is still controversial. King Sobhuza died in the early eighties and a period of instability set in with no clear heir, and no constitution. Various cliques came and went in turmoil, until King Sobhuza's son, Mswati III became Ngwenyama. The country stabilised under the rule of a monarch, but the dominant position of the Royal Family and lack of democracy was challenged in a series of strikes. These did not provide the reforms that the trade unions and the business community (acting together) had hoped for. |
