1950 - 1960 After the Independance of India in 1948 which was the Empire in a real sense, the writing was on the wall for the British Empire - the cost of winning the War had drained Britain of all money and dissolution was inevitable. Swaziland ran at a loss in the Imperial exchequer. Nearly all of Swaziland's economy depended upon the Havelock Asbestos mine and money sent back to their families by gold miners in R.S.A. In 1960 the European Advisory Council presented a memorandum to the Resident Commissioner on a Multiracial Legislative Council - the first actual preparation for the eventual transfer of power from Britain to the Swazis. |
