1910 - 1920 The Swazis were ruled by a benevolent if rather condescending group of well born British administrators, who, deliberately following the Roman model of 2000 years earlier, left native affairs to the natives. Gwamile (Bhunu's mother) was Regent, preparing Sobhuza for the rigours of Kingship. During this time she started sending Swazis to the mines in South Africa in order to get money to buy back land. Asbestos was discovered at Bulembu. The British allowed South Africa a fair degree of autonomy once they were sure that the Boer Wars were over and South Africa became a pro-British Union in 1910. |
