Hereford-Afrikander cattle crossing
the Komati River near Balegane Store. The structure in the background is a
pumphouse for a cattle dip. Pumps of the period were often driven by long
flapping canvas belts, and often powered by tractors or LandRovers.

White settlers copied the Swazi
custom of having bare earth around houses to discourage snakes. But they kept
flowerbeds and birdbaths with often bizarre results. This is the garden at
Balegane Ranch in the early sixties.

Mushroom Farms was a scheme where
good officer stock who had fought in WWI and II obtained virgin land for
farming through a series of loans. Here is a fancy dress party, mid sixties, at
the Francis's farm near Croydon, site of a Mushroom Land Settlement. From left
Leslie Francis (pirate), Janet White (nurse with Philips Milk of Magnesia
bottle on tray), Phil White (smaller pirate), George White (pixie with bow),
Bob Forrester (clown), Elamarie van Rooyen (cut off pants). The organising
adult was Rosemary Francis.

Britain foresaw the development of
Swaziland in agricultural terms, vast sugar schemes and the world's second
largest man-made forest were started by the Colonial Development Corporation
(later Commonwealth D.C.) with the long term aim of being owned by the
Nation.

Low level bridges were common by the
mid-sixties, replacing the earlier ponts. They were prone to flooding but were
designed to withstand water. For a week or so each year, the Komati and Usutu
were impassable. This is the Komati River at Balegane bridge, Cecile Forrester
standing.
