Forestry was fashionable when
land seemed endless, before the population explosion of the 70's and 80's. The
dehydrating effects of the trees had not been fully appreciated at the time

Extension officers were sent out to
educate people on the benefits of hygiene, education, good diet, etc. Here is
Mildred Malie (a Zulu like many of the early junior civil servants, there were
not enough educated Swazis) lecturing on the benefits of eating vegetables.

The British ran their administration
with a few highly educated men with the ability and power to make decisions.
(They also had to take responsibility for them.) The result was that they were
able to effectively run the whole country from this building, the Secretariat,
in Allister Miller St, Mbabane

the wheel and sleds were still common in the fifties and sixties. This one has

Huw and Barbara Jones in their Zephyr
at Towela drift, between Mankayane and Gege. Huw Jones spent the next thirty
years researching the history of Swaziland and published the definative work on
the subject "A Biographical Register of Swaziland to 1902". Over 4000
people who left traces in Swaziland before 1902 are listed alphabetically,
cross referenced and sources are given.
