Carter is the bearded man with his
arms folded. A legendary tough character, he and four others captured the
Portuguese Fort in Delagoa Bay and held it for two days. He was given to
politics and singing, although he had just one tuneless song. He was
instrumental in setting up the gold mining industry near Piggs Peak.

West, it was African style. The same people followed gold rushes for the same
reason, potentially easy wealth, free land and adventure.

having a meeting with Swazi Chiefs, according to the original title. It clearly
shows up the attitudes of the British - there are no Chiefs anywhere in the
engraving. Baden-Powell, founder of the Boy Scouts was one of the British
Commissioners.
