Piggs Peak Gold Mine, 1887. Once
thought to be "a mountain of gold", the mine existed for forty years
or so, but failed to live up to early expectations. The company was
oversubscribed when it was floated on the London Stock Exchange. The area is
now forested with pine trees. The deepest shafts, at 700 feet, are permanently
flooded.
