OPPORTUNITIES FOR CONSERVATION RESEARCH SNTC’s Ecology section hopes to co-ordinate a number of conservation research projects outlined below. Any qualified self-funded person or organisation interested in conducting research or co-operating with us in the projects below is invited to submit particulars to: Kim Roques What does SNTC do? The Swaziland National Trust Commission (SNTC) is mandated to conserve the natural and cultural heritage of Swaziland. What does the Ecology Section of SNTC do? The ecology section provides the service of conservation related data collection, monitoring, research, planning and advising to SNTC and other interested organisations and people, in order to promote the conservation of Swaziland’s natural heritage. Some specific conservation related questions that need researching What is the behaviour and population dynamics of spotted hyena (Crocuta crocuta) in and around Mlawula Nature Reserve? What is the population dynamics of the invasive alien annual, Dymoina weed (Parthenium hysterophorus), and what is it’s response to various management regimes in Mlawula Nature Reserve? What is the population dynamics of the invasive alien shrub, Triffid weed (Chromolaena odorata), and what is it’s response to various control practices in Mlawula Nature Reserve? What is the impact of human activity and tourism on biodiversity in Mantenga Nature Reserve? To what extent, if at all, has there been genetic contamination of black wildebeest (Connochaetes gnou) populations by blue wildebeest (Connochaetes taurinus) in Malolotja Nature Reserve? What is the behaviour and population dynamics of Aardwolf (Proteles cristatus) in Malolotja Nature Reserve? What are the positive and negative impacts of elephant in Malolotja Nature Reserve and what should be done about them? What is the breeding success of raptors in Swaziland? How many are breeding, where, when and how often are they breeding, how many young are fledged, and what are the major factors influencing this? |
