Our logo is adapted from a painting by Phillip Dlamini, 1998, of a purple crested turaco. In traditional Swazi dress, the red feathers feature in the royal headdress, so this bird illustration is not only a symbol for wildlife conservation, but also of cultural heritage.

Eswatini's Invertebrates

There is still much work to be done on researching and compiling information on Eswatini's invertebrates.

Through collaboration with the UCT-ADU Virtual Museum, it has been possible to put together provisional checklists of butterflies and moths, lacewings, dragonflies and damselflies, scorpions and spiders, and some of the beetles. ISpot and iNaturalist have provided a means to identify numerous other invertebrate photos, and combined with the SNPAS biodiversity baseline data project, some preliminary information is available on other groups of invertebrates.

Butterflies and moths were collected and documented by Chuck Saunders and Neville Duke in the 1980's and 1990's, and this information is gradually becoming available. The majority of Neville Duke's moth collection is held by the Ditsong Museum, where the data has not yet been digitized.

Through collaboration with the ARC and Ansie Dippenaar Schoeman, a preliminary checklist of the spiders of Eswatini is being compiled.

A preliminary checklist of scorpions was put together by Richard Boycott and Lorenzo Prendini in 2007, and this has been updated as part of the SNPAS biodiversity baseline data project

Information on dung beetles and ants has also been obtained from Cebsile Magagula at UNISWA, and this will be updated as part of the SNPAS biodiversity baseline data project.

Provisional Moths Checklist

Adobe pdf versions of the provisional moths checklist as at November 2018 (updated January 2019) can be downloaded here. This is very much still a work in progress, and it is expected that many more species will be added. It is also likely that there are incorrectly identified records and other errors. Please contact us if you notice any errors.
