Silene burchellii var. burchellii    (Gunpowder Plant)  igwayintombe elincane,  injuju,  umthusi,
     Love charm
Siphonochilus aethiopicus    (Wild Ginger)  indungulu,  sidvungule,  sidvungulu,
     Cultivated for protection from lightning, snakes and storms.
Smodingium argutum    (African Poison Oak)  intovane,
     Feared as being a dangerous tree that must treated with deference.
Spirostachys africana    (African Sandalwood)  umtfombotsi,
     Traditionally the tree is feared almost taboo. A "jumping bean" tree.
Stachys nigricans    (Betony)  umusa,
     Love charm emetic.
Stangeria eriopus    (Stangeria)  imfingo,
     Charm to ward off evil spirits and protect warriors. Anti witchcraft.
Stapelia gigantea    (Giant Carrion Flower)  tililolomncane,
     Used in sorcery as a poison to cause death. Home protection.
Steganotaenia araliacea var. araliacea    (Carrot Tree)
     Bark & roots used to win law cases.
Stephania abyssinica var. tomentella     umbombo,  umthambana,  umthombo,
     Charm to find lost articles or discover secrets.
Sterculia murex    (Lowveld Chestnut)  gebeleweni,  umbhaba,
     Bark used to protect hometeads from witchcraft.
Sterculia rogersii    (Common Star-chestnut)  lilumbo,  lumbu,  sibhansi,  sibhosa,  ulumba,
     Planted to protect against lightning.
Striga elegans    (Large Witchweed)
     Charm against evil & lightning.
Strophanthus gerrardii    (Spider Flower Poison Rope)  ubuhlungubendlovu,
     Charm to ensure good crops. Probably also poisonous.
Strychnos decussata    (Cape Teak)  umpathawenk,
     With crocodile fat will protect from lightning. Ceremonial sticks.
Strychnos henningsii    (Red Bitterberry)  manono,  mhlophe,  silume lesi,  umnonono,
     Bark & leaves are charm against snakebite. Roots used in sangoma initiations. Stem and branches used in incwala ceremonies.
Strychnos madagascariensis    (Black Monkey Orange)  emkhwakhwa,  lihlala,  umgulugulu,  umhlala,  umkhwakhwa,  umkhwakhwa,
     Root used in sangoma initiations.
Suregada africana    (Common Canary-berry)  manyokane,  sitfubi,  ummemezi,  velabahleke,  vulabahleke,
     Roots are a charm to make people laugh.
Synadenium cupulare    (Dead Man's Tree)  sidletjana,
     By superstition an evil tree luring people to death. Irritant vapour.
Talinum arnotii    (Porcupine Root)  mphunyuka,  umpunyu,
     Charm against lightning.
Tapinanthus oleifolius    (Birdlime)  inovu,
     Bird-lime
