ArchaeologyObjectives and Functions This department is essential in order to prevent the loss of knowledge of the past through protection of archaeological sites and artifacts. The objectives of the Archaeology Department are: (a) to undertake research into the past (archaeological survey) (b) to protect and preserve the country's archaeological artifacts Resources The Archaeology Department was operational from 1977 to 1989, carrying out archaeological and ethnological studies within Swaziland, including excavation of the Sibebe and Siphiso Rock Shelters. Since this date, there have been no activities of this nature, and no staff employed under this Department. In addition, there are a number of artifacts and other objects for which no documentation is currently held by the SNTC. Archaeological sites within SNTC's protected areas include the Lion Cavern, in Malolotja Nature Reserve, and the Siphiso Rock Shelter in Mlawula Nature Reserve. Archaeological artifacts that have been preserved are housed in the National Museum. The preservation of rock paintings falls under the Monuments Department of SNTC. |
